Project Overview
Sacred Heart was built in 1905 and designed by Louis H. Giele, a German-born American architect.
The architecture of Sacred Heart Church is an early twentieth-century interpretation of the basilica style of architecture, with origins tracing back to the early days of Christianity. While its exterior draws inspiration from the typical parish churches of Central and Northern Europe with its “ Gothic Lite” decorative elements and cladding in local stone, its interior strongly follows the textbook attributes of an Italianate Basilica. Over the years, the heritage of these attributes was further accentuated by subsequent renovations. In an effort to build upon this architectural heritage, MPSB Studios contracted SL Design to create a new decorative painting program to be implemented within the Sanctuary and Transepts that seeks to unify all these elements under one stylistic vocabulary while also celebrating the noble intentions of those who preceded it.

Sanctuary Shrines
A simple pattern replaces the existing mosaic behind the marble statues of the Blessed Mother and Joseph, featuring a stylized lily symbolizing the holy trinity.

Trompe l’oeil Ceiling
The ceiling was painted with several shades of cream, green and blue to mimic the highlights and shadows of a coffered ceiling. It is bordered by a geometric floral motif that continues around the borders of the church.

Decorative Stencils
Decorative stencils to be painted in gold leaf depicting vinework reminiscent of Italian Gothic style to be used on borders around windows and wall areas in the nave, as well as on the arches of the ceiling.

Entrance Paintings
Proposed paintings above entrance doors, depicting St. Elizabeth Seton, Catherine labouret, and St Cabrini, saints that were devoted to the sacred heart.
